Daily Deviation - lessons learned

Tue Jun 8, 2004, 8:37 AM
I've been kinda on a vacation of sorts from dA, with finals and classes and interships and jobs and such. Well when I returned, I expected to have like 50 new messages, most of those being deviations by people on my devwatch for my perusing and commenting enjoyment. Well when I logged on I had like 334 new messages.... and I thought, "Damn, someone's been hard at work."

When I got to my messages I saw that most of these messages were +favorites and comments on my stuff. Woah gang... hold the phone. What?!?!

Turns out that ^voodoo-prophet featured my piece as one of the deaily deviations while I was gone. Holy shit... so now I've got like 2000 views and 168 +favs on this one piece and it's not even my favorite piece. Thanks voodoo... I really appreciate that you thought that much of my work.

Well after calling my roommate ~ witchhunter-geist to gloat I went to bed. Well this morning I realized that I have t reply to every one of these comments and messages... I'm not one of those assholes who doesn't appreciate a +fav... I treat every one like it's my first one and appreciate them equally.

The positive is that the exposure will draw people to my page to see my other pieces... so responding to 300 messages a very small price to pay. But the moral of the story is that no matter how big you think that you'll get. Appreciate every bit of criticism and praise you recieve. People will respect you more if you respect them.. they took the time to +fav you, have the common courtesy to return the favor.

You never know when it'll be the last comment you'll get.

Thanks for all of your comment, positive, negative and otherwise. Whether you know it or not, you've been shaping me into the artist that I am today.

A suggestion: Go one step further, and save all those names. For later, when you feel like browsing.

Don't just thank dA users, go browse their webs. And make new friends and contacts that way.

I see thank yous for a fave in a dA comment, these days, and I think, what a waste. No one really connects. They just say thanks and toodle off.

Make better use..of every person in your path. Just my view. Interesting art you have. Thanks.

Unfortunately, dA doesn't have a way that I can save all 3oo some-odd numbers, so unless something on the main page captures my eye enough for me to bookmark... then I have to thank and run... otherwise, I'd never empty my inbox... I can only see the 20 most recent messages at a time.

But relationships do form... for example, I'm talking to you now... I made at least 10 new friends yesterday, but I responded to like 100 messages. One thing that I've learned is that I'm not going to be friends with everyone I come in contact with... most people just pass on by. dA is no different. Most people will say their piece and keep going. And I'll never see them again.

There's nothing wrong with that but that's just the way it is.

No. There IS something wrong. And that's NOT the way of it--we view people as too disposable, on the web; like you or I aren't really real; really there, creating. And that leads to the anonymity and actual sense of false entitlement to every darn object we see--including other people's art and works. Not good, not good, at all.

Anyway, I'm confused. If you can SEE a person's name to go thank them at their web, you have the makings of a first class customer list (for the thinking being, if they faved your work, they would enjoy it enough one day to put a few coins on the table for it.) And, if not THEM, then the friends who gather round them--who share their tastes, most likely. See where I'm going with all this? And yet I know..for darn sure, most people just come to a web, say thank you (generally without even looking around) and off they trod back to their art cave. Each artist. In his little dark cave. *grin*

Open a second dA window, my friend. Open one of your journals. Cut and paste the name into that journal, even use an alphabetical index if you want to go that far, alphabetizing names as you go--and save the journal entry. Just like all these damn clubs do with their member lists that mostly just sit there, right? *grin* Simple, Simon. Take that pie and show it to those fair. Okay?

Luck to you. You're doing great!
